It Takes Two

Argentinean tango masters Nito and Elba Garcia trip lightly into town

When the tango starts, and the blood rises, and the men and women lock hips and begin to sway and dip and stop and stalk, ay, you will know the rush of passion and the pain of amor.

The Missouri Arts Council and the Argentine Society of St. Louis welcome tango masters Nito and Elba Garcia on Sunday to the Tango Ball, a fundraiser for the Hispanic Arts Council of St. Louis at the Sheldon.

The guests of honor perform a floor show that takes no prisoners, ballgoers join in, and the evening gradually opens up to other Latin styles like salsa, merengue, cha-cha, mambo and rumba. Admission is $10, and a cash bar is available.

The talented Garcias, residents of Mar del Plata, Argentina, are in the midst of a U.S. tour showcasing their acumen on the parquet. They have been performing and teaching together since 1975 and had won many tango competitions dancing with other partners for some time before then. They are featured annually at many festivals and on cruise ships. Witnessing their razor-sharp moves and severe mien may induce a burning desire to tango. It would be foolish to resist.

The Tango Ball takes place from 8 p.m.-midnight May 28 at the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington Ave. Call 863-0570 for more information.
