Second Opinion

Welcoming dining reviewer Melissa Martin to the RFT staff

Next week we welcome a new invisible face to this page in the person of Melissa Martin, whose reviews will alternate with mine.

Web-savvy foodies will already know Melissa well from her work for Citysearch, one of the first and best online city guides, for whom she wrote the vast majority of its dozens of editorial profiles of St. Louis restaurants. In addition to that broad local knowledge, she grew up a military dependent and brings to the job of restaurant writing the perspective of having lived in a whole lot of places other than here.

Most important, though, is that we've quickly learned in the short time we've known her that Melissa is an absolute fanatic about food. She chose her current home primarily because of the size of the kitchen, overcoming the fact that her second move-in criterion, a cable system that carried the Food Network, was unfulfilled. (Happily, this was recently remedied.)

By day, she's a book editor; as one might expect from her choosing such a bibliophilic profession, she accepts any excuse to add new cookbooks and other reference works to her collection. We like her stuff a lot, and we think you will, too.
