Location, location, location. That's one of the things that make the Salvation Army the city's best thrift store. If boutique-style "thrift" stores are your thing, forget about it. The Salvation Army has all the odors and clutter of the real thing, the kind of place where the professionals go to stock their shelves with so-called schlock that earns a tidy profit when labeled "antique" or "consignment." Besides offering two floors of retail space, the Army is quick to discount stuff that doesn't move. Pricers also label everything in sometimes humorous fashion. For example, a scythe (perhaps initially overpriced at $25) is a "weedeater" in the eyes of those who run the place. Some examples of past bargains: an almost-new, room-sized wool rug in the Persian fashion at $40; a pair of Bostonian wingtip shoes for $2.41; a mint Jos. A. Bank sportcoat at $5.98; and a beat-up, though still upright, piano for just $41. The beauty of the Salvation Army is that it's just two blocks from the St. Vincent DePaul and Goodwill thrift stores, making for a convenient round of thrifting for those who just can't get enough. But Salvation Army gets the nod on the basis of its prices and selection.
