Dandy Warhols

Wednesday, Nov. 22; Firehouse

If you don't like what you're hearing from the Dandy Warhols -- and if you don't, maybe you should wonder what the heck you're doing at a rock show at all -- just stick around a couple of minutes, and it will change. Few bands these days are as all over the map as the Portland, Ore.-based Dandys. On their first two albums, Dandys Rule OK and The Dandy Warhols Come Down, guitarist/vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor (what's up with that?) & Co. tried on faux-Britpop and trance-inducing shoe-gazer fare and threw in some squalling Velvet Underground stylings to boot (with a name like the Dandy Warhols, how could they not?). And that was just the beginning. Their latest album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, kicks off with "Godless," a song that matches the acoustic-guitar strum of "My Sweet Lord" with a cool Burt Bacharach-style horn riff. From there it's on to the dreamy "Nietzsche," the down-home stomper "Country Leaver," the latter-day grunge of "Horse Pills" and the lo-fi indie rock of "Shakin'" and "Big Indian." You could say the Dandys are eclectic to a fault, but cut them some slack -- they've got a wicked sense of humor, as they proved with their near-hit single from Come Down, "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," and the new album's "Bohemian Like You," about a guy who goes boho just to get laid. They're funny, they're smart and they rock: What's not to like?
