Cat Scratch Fever Benefit

Thursday, June 21; Way Out Club

Although the Cat Scratch Fever Benefit is completely Nuge-free (no hirsute NRA guys in raccoon caps felling deer with crossbows -- sorry), the title is not only supremely rockin', it's also fairly accurate, at least if you change the word "scratch" to "bite." Patti Loth, guitarist and singer in St. Louis' favorite low-fi girl-group Ouija (pictured), was bitten on the hand by a stray cat a few months ago. An emergency-department doc screwed up, the wound became infected and Loth ended up in the hospital for more than a week with a raging fever. Her bandmates, Bruk Longbottom and Sue Zeilstra, decided to organize a benefit to help defray her medical expenses. It's not only a worthy cause; it promises to be a great show. Although Ouija isn't scheduled to play -- Loth has a gig that night with her other band, the Civil Tones -- Longbottom and Zeilstra will grace us with a rare performance by their supergroup side project, Tiger Beat, which also boasts Megan Purcell (the Poppies), Marcia Pandolfi (the Fantasy Four) and Spitzie Q. West (Sexicolor). Expect hilarious choreography, candy-colored wigs and an oddly endearing paean to Scott Baio. Must-see newcomers the Golden Spiderz and the Fantasy Four round out the bill; factor in a rumored appearance by a certain Slammy winner (no, it's not Nelly), and you won't even miss the Motor City Madman.
