Brian Jonestown Massacre with the Honkeys

Saturday, March 2; Hi-Pointe

Of all the cheekily named bands to emerge from the 1990s (e.g., John Cougar Concentration Camp, Yanni DiFranco), the Brian Jonestown Massacre was possibly the most talented and certainly the most culturally relevant. Remaining faithful to its '60s-era roots without sounding dated, the Brian Jonestown Massacre's brand of psychedelic punk outshone just about everyone else's back in the day; after more than a decade, the band is still cranking it out.

That's not to say the Bay Area-based six-piece has passed through the last 12 years unscathed -- an ill-fated record deal with TVT and countless lineup changes were among their career challenges -- but core members Anton Newcombe, Matt Hollywood and Dean Taylor are still plugging away. And if the gloomy future-classics on their most recent release, Bravery, Repetition & Noise, are any indication, the Brian Jonestown Massacre might live on for years to come. Heed the warnings implicit in the group's name (steer clear of Kool-Aid-touting prophets and "death by misadventure"), and you will, too.
