The Eyeliners, with the Ded Bugs and Picture Book of Saints

Monday, April 8; Rocket Bar

Check out the songs listed on Sealed With a Kiss(Panic Button/Lookout Records), the new album by Chicago's Eyeliners, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a collection of classic '50s girl-group covers. "Sealed With a Kiss," "When Will I See You Again?" and "Wishing on a Star" are just a few of the song titles that recall the tough-chick wholesomeness of the Shangri-Las and the Shirelles.

Listen to the album, and you'll find the tunes as familiar as their names, although they're all technically originals. The Eyeliners play a supercatchy brand of punk rock that clearly shows the influence of earlier AM-radio-worshiping punks such as the Ramones, Runaways and early Go-Go's. But unlike their labelmates the Donnas, the Eyeliners never succumb to the temptations of '70s-rock guitar solos or campiness; instead, they're economical (12 songs in 27 minutes!) and straight to the point. Having already gained the approval of Ramones-loving Chicagoan Ben Weasel of the band Screeching Weasel, who guest-sings on the album, the Eyeliners should appeal to those who still love plenty of melody and pop hooks in their punk rock.
