Based on the nineteenth-century German novel, Effi Briest tells the story of a radiant beauty who is married to a much older Prussian diplomat who takes her to a Baltic port where she drifts into an affair with a local womanizer. Hard up for cash, Fox lets himself be picked up at a public lavatory by an older man named Max. When Fox wins the lottery, Max's friends become Fox's friends.
