Get Your Church On

Just when you think you have the Catholic Church figured out, they go and surprise you -- and in a nice way. The Church is practically synonymous with "staid" or at least "conservative." So what's a band like Dr. Zhivegas, who is known for its decidedly unconservative, tear-the-roof-off, disco-funk hit-parade of party-favorite cover songs, doing playing at Cathedralfête? Dr. Zhivegas' brand of music is synonymous with gettin' it on, to put it mildly. Chalk it up as another mystery of the Church, and just be glad something so, um, secular is kicking off this year's street party/fundraiser for the St. Louis Cathedral (4431 Lindell, 314-534-2824).

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday night, Dr. Zhivegas will indeed get the party started on an outdoor stage in the school parking lot. Admission for the concert is $5, concessions will be available for a few dollars more, and you can dance in the street for free. The party picks up again on Saturday at 10 a.m., with more music (no charge this time), more food, more drinks, vendor and artisan booths and strolling entertainers until 10 p.m. And on Sunday? Rest, my child; you've earned it. You've had a full night and day and night of partying and dancing, and you've helped raise a little money for the Cathedral's upkeep. -- Paul Friswold

It must be tough being a parent. Kids seem to get bored more easily than adults (well, they seem to be more vocal about it, anyway), and it's difficult finding activities to keep them occupied that don't break the bank. Ideally, you also want something that you can participate in, too, so that you can establish a better bond with your children and hopefully keep them out of jail someday. Parents, you're in luck, because the denizens of the Bevo Mill area (Morganford Road at Gravois Avenue,) have a free and fun solution for you this Saturday -- the Bevo Days Festival. Bring the kids down for carnival rides, food and games.
