La Bonne Bouchée

Don't let the frou-frou name fool you. While the sweets purveyed at this storefront bakery and light-bite eatery are un peu françaishere and there -- mousse lining a layer cake, some éclairs and napoleons on the pastry menu -- La Bonne Bouchée is all about big, tall, crown-like American cakes. No wonder, then, that it's become the wedding-cake maker of choice in these parts, and no wonder reservations are often required whether you want something traditional (Black Forest cake, carrot cake) or snazzy-sounding (their definition of "strawberry cake": "yellow cake layered with vanilla mousse and strawberries, iced with white buttercream, sliced almonds on the side, and topped with fresh fruits"). Best of all, since it's not really a French place, there's no pressure to boycott during trying political times. Go ahead -- have your cake and eat it, too.
