Sort of like a postmodern Felix and Oscar, Junior Senior is a duo of opposites (Jesper "Junior" Mortenson is tiny, straight and writes the music; Jeppe "Senior" Laursen is enormous, gay and adds touches like shouting and handclaps) that brings together the pop-music opposites of dance and rock music.
Granted, that sort of thing isn't new; American bands like the Faint and !!! have been creating a buzz by reviving the post-punk/electro amalgam in the last few years. What makes Junior Senior's debut album, D-D-Don't Stop the Beat, phenomenally grin-inducing, though, is that it's more in the spirit of early rock & roll, before dance and rock music became separate styles. The best tracks apply a DJ's sense of juxtaposition to the last three decades of pop ("Boy Meets Girl" sounds like the Creation layered over Kool & the Gang's "Celebration") as though the album was a makeover on Queer Eye for the Garage Guy.
It doesn't hurt, either, that neither Junior nor Senior takes himself the slightest bit seriously. Like the chunkily animated video for "Move Your Feet" (almost certainly the best Michael Jackson single in a decade), they're cartoonish and hedonistic, but they never slip into irony. When Junior sings on the lo-fi "White Trash" that he and Senior will "show we've got balls like the New York Dolls," you feel that, scarily enough, he is going to do just that.
