Cold Fishin'

Not science, but sport

SAT 2/7

It's cool to fish. Remember the one that got away? It was half the length of your arm and weighed as much as a puppy. It still carries around all of your untapped potential; inside its scaly skin is the key to everything you still want to do or be, and every time you tell the story, a new significance emerges. There's nothing quite like sitting outdoors at dawn, watching your line, tuning in and zoning out. Perhaps a thermos of coffee between your knees. Perhaps a silent nod of communion between fellow sportsmen. Perhaps that guy, over there, will make you an omelet.

Partake of all the kitchen-sink-style omelets you want at the Tilles Park Trout Fishing and Breakfast Kick-Off (Litzsinger and McKnight roads, at the Windegger Shelter) on this, the first day of the catch-and-keep fishing season. The event starts at 6 a.m. with an all-you-can-eat breakfast, made over an open fire between 7 and 8 a.m. Call 636-391-3474 to register. Admission is $7 for everyone thirteen and older, $5 for children ages six through twelve and free for kids five and younger. The weather may be cold, the work may be hard, but the potential payoff is too great to be ignored. Chances are, the one that got away is still out there, just waiting to be caught. -- Jedidiah Ayres

We're Boat People
Are you?

It's simply not possible to enjoy the great outdoors without firearms, gadgets and all manner of souped-up watercraft. That's why you, nature enthusiast that you are, will be preparing for summer fun, frolic and contemplation of life's wonder by hitting the St. Louis Boat & Sports Show. Face it, you're gonna need a propane-fueled rotisserie that'll cook twenty rainbow trout in half the time and a juicer that plugs into your SUV's cigarette lighter. You can stock up on these and much more from Tuesday, February 3, through Sunday, February 8, at the America's Center and Edward Jones Dome (701 Convention Center Plaza, $8 for adults, $2 for children ages six to twelve). Opening times vary each day, so call 314-567-0020 or visit www.discoverboating.com for more information. -- John Goddard
