The Beaver Trilogy Trent Harris. (unrated) Similar in style and content to inept home video with out-of-focus shots and self-conscious, wholly incompetent talent, this trilogy's first episode features 21-year-old Beaver, Utah, resident Groovin' Gary. He convinces freelance Salt Lake City television cameraman Trent Harris to attend a "show" in which Gary performs in drag as "Olivia Newton Dawn." Despite the embarrassingly amateur event, Harris decides to remake this 1980 incident, slightly altered, in '81 with a game Sean Penn and then again in '85 with Crispin Glover. Penn's and Glover's pathos -- plus the opportunity to consider fame, lack of self-awareness and mockumentary form -- rescue The Beaver Trilogy from mawkish, mean-spirited satire, but only barely, as its 83 minutes test the limits of patience. Screens at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 18, and Sunday, September 19, in the Moore Auditorium on the campus of Webster University, 470 E. Lockwood Avenue. Call 314-968-7487 for more information.
