The Butterfly House
When kids venture inside the tropical conservatory at the Butterfly House, their eyes get huge and they look around in awe. (Many of them actually stop talking!) More than 1,200 butterflies of 60 species flutter through the warm air, landing on the leaves of 150 different kinds of tropical plants. Kids can investigate the vibrant colors of these exquisite winged creatures up close and watch in fascination as they extract nectar from flowers. They can witness the miracle of metamorphosis as butterflies emerge from their cocoons. Better still, big brothers and sisters can creep out their younger siblings for weeks with stories about the giant millipedes, black scorpions and thumb-size cockroaches. The Butterfly House is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $6 for adults and $4 for children ages four to twelve. Children under three get in free.
