Best New St. Louis Play

Great Day in the Morning

Everyone knows The Glass Menagerie and Meet Me in St. Louis are set in St. Louis. And it's fun to hear onstage references to the Jewel Box and the Skinker trolley. But let's face it: Those scripts have been seen. So what a treat it was to be exposed to a brand-new St. Louis-themed play -- and then to discover that it's more than 40 years old! Alice Cannon's beguiling Great Day in the Morning is set in Kerry Patch, the Irish section of St. Louis, in 1929. Frequent references to the likes of Lindbergh, Kroger's and fishing in the Mississippi River below Calvary Cemetery actually took a back seat to the play itself, a poignant character study of a woman whose world is beginning to unravel on the eve of her niece's first Communion. In 1962 the Broadway production starring Colleen Dewhurst closed after ten performances. Grateful thanks to ACT Inc., a local group that takes pleasure in rediscovering lost plays, for mounting this lovingly written comedy-drama.
