Best Place to Buy Local Art

This bright, inviting gallery occupies prime art-world real estate at the corner of Euclid and McPherson avenues in the oh-so-arty Central West End. But it doesn't try to compete with the neighborhood's higher-brow gallery trifecta, Smith-Shearburn-and-Schmidt. Instead Xen emphasizes the craftier arts, like ceramics, glass and metals (with the occasional foray into photography, painting and prints). And most of the artists represented are from the immediate region, though many have achieved national recognition (including ceramics artists Dan Anderson and Jeri Au; glass artist Tony Cray; and metalsmiths Paulette Myers, Lanie Kodner and Sherri Jaudes). Xen's recent show of ceramics up-and-comer Melody Ellis was an absolute splash. Affable owner Dawn Nash maintains a welcoming, un-snooty atmosphere, and some of the art is even affordable. Plus, she throws a mean opening reception and does framing too. What more could you ask for?
