Marry Me. (Not Rated) The third and final film in the Margaret Mead Traveling Film and Video Festival, Marry Me reveals the formidable difficulties of a cross-cultural marriage and physical and emotional relocation. Gladis and Erik wed gleefully on April 5, 2001, in her hometown of Havana, Cuba. Five months later Gladis and her seven-year-old son, Omar, join Erik in Hamburg, Germany, where they encounter unexpected racism and stressful ennui caused by language barriers: Neither Gladis nor Omar speaks German. Excerpts from two years of candid footage encapsulate the couple's struggle: episodes with Erik's family and with German bureaucrats, a trip to Italy and an old flame's visit to Gladis, confrontations with neighbors and with each other. The romantic ideal takes a beating when confronted with the day-to-day demands of such significant change. In Spanish and German with English subtitles. Screens Wednesday, February 23, in the Moore Auditorium on the campus of Webster University, 470 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves. (Diane Carson)
