They may not know the musician, but many St. Louisans already know the music of Johnny A. That's because cuts from the guitarist's 2004 CD, Get Inside, have been in heavy rotation this summer as bumper music on the TV broadcasts of Cardinals baseball. Considering the team's loss to the Red Sox in last year's World Series, a few fans might object to Redbird telecasts using music from a Boston-based artist. But even the most diehard Cards fan would have to admit that Johnny A. is one impressive player. With a technical facility and eclecticism recalling the late Danny Gatton, A. blends blues, rock, jazz, country and assorted other musical idioms into his own deceptively simple instrumental compositions. Tunes like "Hip Bone" and "Sing Singin'" are catchy and memorable enough to hook even casual listeners, yet complex and full of enough surprises to let Johnny A. show off a comprehensive catalog of licks and techniques that run the guitar gamut from Atkins to Zappa.
