Bruce Springsteen

Saturday, August 6; Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard)

As some would have it (notably The New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones), the lapidary narratives of Bruce Springsteen's Devils & Dust are no more fit for popular music than Chekov or Hawthorne. But pop music is irreducible to an ideology of catchy good times, and Springsteen has always been pop -- even when he's mapping a moral wasteland via the shadowy movements of hookers, killers and regular Joes and Josés yearning, as in one Dust song, for a final tumble in Maria's bed. The spartan new album isn't Nebraska or The Ghost of Tom Joad, but it's no less exemplary or tonic -- especially in a culture that thinks that if it only succumbs to family values or pop hooks, the dark in our hearts will go away. It won't, and neither will Bruce.

Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $77.50 to $87.50; call 314-534-1111 for more information.
