Shelby Lynne

Friday, August 26; Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City)

Shelby Lynne won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2001 -- as though some illegitimate twin of hers had been stalking the country charts since 1989 (when her debut was released). Lynne's albums since the win have argued for the doppelgänger theory. She's morphed from a Spector-soul diva into a pin-up pop diva and finally into an anti-diva diva on her most recent album, Suit Yourself. Largely acoustic, the disc is a kiss-off to everything but false starts, gospel harmony, the percussion of clapped hands and slapped thighs, rainy nights in Georgia and lays as sweet as Alabama iced tea. Some artists claim an independence they've barely earned; Lynne has won hers through an internal strife she still confronts in every line. When she stalks the stage, she'll bust your heart and your balls and leave you begging for more. -- Roy Kasten

Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25; call 314-534-1111 for more information.
