A flamboyant showman as well as a consummate guitarist, Buddy Guy has been known to get carried away with his stage antics, occasionally to the detriment of his music. But when the 69-year-old Chicago blues icon gets down to business, his razor-wire tone, intense vocals and explosive solos demonstrate amply why some call him the prime living exponent of classic electric blues. First emerging in the late '50s, Guy became a role model for many younger guitarists through sessions backing his mentor Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and other Chicago greats, along with a long-running partnership with Junior Wells. After a bit of a slump in the '80s, he's now enjoying a late-career renaissance, the one-time apprentice transformed into an acknowledged master of his craft.
