The Knitters

Genetics have proven that two polar entities can spring forth from the same original components. Just look at The Knitters. The band shares three core members with legendary LA punkers X -- Exene Cervenka, D.J. Bonebrake and John Doe -- while Knitters guitarist Dave Alvin filled in for guitarist Billy Zoom when the latter left X in 1985. But don't expect to hear a punk show from The Knitters, who recorded their folksy first disc, Poor Little Critters on the Road, that same year -- and whose recent second album, The Modern Sounds of The Knitters, holds onto that same alt-country twang. Many songs are crossovers between the two bands (such as Modern's take on X's "Burning House of Love"), but the fact that the Knitters continue to pull covers from unlikely sources -- like a version of Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" -- proves they still have plenty of surprises up their sleeve.
