Beat Happenings

Week of September 14, 2005

With apologies to "Jenny Says": "Harrah's says/'Turn off the radio'/Harrah's says, 'Turn off the lights'/Harrah's says, 'Come to the VooDoo Lounge'/To raise money up for what Katrina tore down." Local faves (and New Orleans residents) Cowboy Mouth had their homes and belongings devastated by the hurricane and are doing shows on Wednesday and Thursday, September 14 and 15, at 8 p.m. in the VooDoo Lounge (777 Casino Center Drive, Maryland Heights), with all proceeds from the $20 tickets benefiting relief efforts. When the world is comin' down on Orleans, why not go?

Show me shook up:Screw the West; this is the Gateway to the King! Scott Seggi is a lip-curlin', hip-swirlin' Elvis impersonator who owns enough rhinestone jumpsuits to make Nicolas Cage swoon. This faux-Presley shakes everything from concerts to (yes!) singing telegrams. But don't faint just yet: After the show, he poses for pictures and signs silk scarves -- and unlike the real Elvis, you won't have to relinquish your virginity or your prescription pills. Fulfill your dream of seeing the quasi-King with a free show at the Radisson Downtown (200 North Fourth Street) on Friday, September 16, at 8:30 p.m. He thanks you, thanks you very much.

Q: What's better than jazz? A:Free jazz, workshops, goodie bags, arts, crafts and foooood. The fifth annual Old Webster Jazz Festival (Gore and Lockwood avenues, Webster Groves) is rain-or-shining on Saturday, September 17, from noon to 11 p.m. The untimely passing of headliner Johnnie Johnson has led to a tribute stage headed by Billy Peek (Corey Christiansen Trio and Erin Bode open for Peek), while the Gaslight Square stage features Kevin Mitchell and Jeanne Trevor. Additionally, the performers will offer jazz tutorials for future OWJF headliners. Visit www.oldwebsterjazzfestival.com for all that jazz.

You're going to Hollywood! Can you wail as well as Kelly Clarkson? Head over to Ameristar to join the Superstar competition. Registration for the first four weeks began yesterday, and the contest continues, American Idol-style, every Tuesday through November 1. Cash prizes are awarded each week to those who advance, and the winner receives $10,000 or an all-expenses-paid trip to LA to record a demo. Pomranz, out!
