Kathleen Edwards

Tuesday, September 20; Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City)

Can alt-country, or Americana -- or whatever the hell you want to call it -- ever be classified as "dreamy" and "creamy"? It certainly couldn't until Kathleen Edwards' sensational 2005 LP, Back to Me. That rare album with nary a bad song, the creamiest, dreamiest result is attained on "Old Time's Sake" with the assistance of fellow Canuck Sarah McLachlan's producer, Pierre Marchand. The arrangement is hardly as lush as your garden variety McLachlan track (a wise choice here), while the balance of the album itself tends more toward the slide-heavy offerings of Lucinda Williams and her Love Band, with whom Edwards has inevitably been compared. Fact is, there's only one Lucinda Williams, just as there's only one Kathleen Edwards. Both offer sensational-sounding stories of love's sucker-punches and should absolutely not be missed live.

Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $12 to $14; call 314-727-4444 for more information.
