McCoy Tyner

Friday and Saturday, October 7 and 8; Finale Music and Dining (8025 Bonhomme Avenue, Clayton)

The development of a distinctive individual style is crucial to the artistic success of a jazz musician, and few modern pianists have been more successful than McCoy Tyner at forging an instantly recognizable sound. As a young man, he was an integral component of the high-energy onslaughts of John Coltrane's classic '60s quartet, a musician who used chord voicings based on fourths instead of triads and unleashed high-speed right-hand runs punctuated by left-hand bombs like thunder in a rainstorm. As a mature musician, he's integrated sumptuous balladry, orchestral depth and even a certain sense of playfulness into his music -- while still retaining the drive, power and gravity that mark him as one of the most admired and oft-imitated piano players in jazz.

Two shows each night, starting at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $40; call 314-863-8631 for more information.
