Will Hoge

Wednesday, October 5; Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City)

When Will Hoge released 2000's Carousel,he walked a thin line between nondescript, Counting Crows-style frat rock and truck-commercial-friendly neo-country. But 2003's Blackbird on a Lonely Wire -- which ratcheted up the noise and picked up bluesy guitar wail -- found the Nashville singer/songwriter making a bid for pop stardom with the slick, straight-ahead rocker "Secondhand Heart." Hoge then dove headfirst into the heavily populated waters of the politically motivated folk singer on the AmericaEP. Unfortunately, songs like "Bible vs. Gun" (an anti-war song written from the perspective of a regretful soldier writing home to his poor mama) and "Hey Mr. President" (a jangly dress-down of GWB) made Hoge sound like a rhyming-obsessed college kid eager to prove his cred at open-mic night. Still, haters rest easy: This current tour is in support of a forthcoming new studio album, Hearts Are Gonna Roll.

Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10; call 314-727-4444 for more information.
