Augustana

Tuesday, October 18; the Pageant, (6161 Delmar Boulevard)

In 2004, three-fourths of Augustana left nearby Greenville, Illinois, and congregated in San Diego, the first stop in a nomadic journey that eventually found the quartet in Atlanta and recording with noted producer Brendan O' Brien. Theirs is a whirlwind tale of small-town-dreams-to-big-city-riches worthy of Axl Rose -- except for the fact that the sensitive rockers' major-label debut, All the Stars and Boulevards, is in the brainiac college-rock tradition of Counting Crows albums and brooding heartthrobs. In fact, the CD's highlight is the longing "Stars and Boulevards," an astute portrait of being homesick for a place that doesn't exist, veiled in the fragile beauty of upper-register piano and tortured vocals.

Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20; call 314-726-6161 for more information.
