Beat Happenings

Mining for gold: As if coal miners haven't already had a rough enough time (black lung, anyone?), they're now struggling to rebuild the Historic Miners Theatre. Originally built in 1918, the theater was funded by the local coal miners' unions and served as their social hall for nickel movies and Sadie Hawkins dances. Although the theater still hosts weddings and the like, the Miners Institute is diggin' to restore the building (204 West Main Street, Collinsville, Illinois; 618-344-00026). They've unearthed local jazzy gems the RX Blues (www.rxblues .com), who will contribute to the effort by performing a benefit on Saturday, October 15, at 8 p.m. The suggested donation is $8, but they will surely appreciate any coinage.

This lady's got soul:She has an extraordinary name to complement an extraordinary talent (sort of a jazzier, classier Madonna, if you will): Danita Mumphard! Born into a musical family, Danita surprised no one when she blossomed into a commanding force on the local jazz and gospel scenes. She's got a successful gospel CD and countless featured performances behind her (like last weekend's Divas 2005 concert at the Sheldon), and she is debuting her first jazz CD, With Love, at Cookie's Jazz & More (20 Allen Avenue, Suite 150, Webster Groves; 314-962-5299) this Saturday, October 15, at 8 p.m. With Trio Tres Bien backing her, Danita will sing both standards and originals that will have you humming her name all the way home.

Mada-who-chi?If you've not yet heard the St. Louis staple known as Madahoochi, it can be presumed that you are living under a rock far outside the bi-state area. (Seriously, guys, I'm the clubs editor and I enter the name "Madahoochi" in our database more times a week than anything else.) The RFT has named them Best Jam Band for two years in a row, and Cicero's patrons enjoy their music every freaking Monday night. So heed these commands: Go to Mississippi Nights (914 North First Street; 314-421-3853). Go on Friday, October 14, at 8 p.m. (I know Reba's on, but set the TiVo). Pay the $5 for the release party of Madahoochi's third CD, In Fantastic Stereo. Experience local living legends. Then thank me later.
