The last time Whiskeytown alum Caitlin Cary swung through town, it was in support of Begonias, her album of duets with Thad Cockrell. Saddled with nary a gig between Milwaukee and Nashville in late July, Cary's band had to stop somewhere along the way to break up the drive. That somewhere was Rick Wood's family room in Clayton, where Cary, Cockrell and three accompanists played two hour-long sets in front of 50 or so invitees. On this night, the quintet sparkled as though they were headlining a proper music hall, stuck around for some post-show Stag and conversation out back and then tucked themselves into tiny twin beds with cartoon covers in Wood's children's rooms. Think about that the next time you're tempted to snap up the new Ashlee Simpson disc and then maybe make a detour toward the country section.
