Birthright: When you name a kid "Harmony," her career track is essentially preordained. And if she rebels and becomes a doctor or something, people are still gonna ask her if she can sing. Luckily for Harmony Fernandez, her impressive vocal skills mean she will never have to face such a conundrum. Rather, this St. Louis native embodies her name, blending harmony and melody for a CD of soul and funk (consider her a Beth Hart for the alternative set). Drop by Vintage Vinyl (6610 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-721-4096) on Thursday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. for a free unplugged performance, and then pick up her CD on site.
Hurri-Can!: While most victims of Hurricane Katrina found relief in canned food, bottled water and shelter, Jason Greenwald eschewed such sundries in favor of music. Finding himself flooded out of Tulane University for the semester, Jason decided to forgo a permanent roof in favor
of the open road and his trusty baseball cap. His musical misadventures have led him to the Red Sea (6511 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-863-0099), where he will be performing on Saturday, December 4. Sounding like a stripped-down Matt Nathanson, Greenwald will make you feel selfishly pleased that his NOLA exile led him to the Loop.
Hosea Hey Sanna Sanna:What would your grandma say if she knew you were going to a hardcore show for the holidays? Maybe something along the lines of, "Why can't you support a nice local boy, like that sweet Nelly feller?" Well, what if you told Grandma that you were going to a rock show that benefits the Guardian Angel Settlement Association (GASA)? She'd probably give you a quarter and her blessing. Do right by Grandma on Friday, December 2 at 8 p.m., when Off Broadway (3509 Lemp Avenue; 314-308-4186) hosts the benefit concert. Tickets are $10, with each canned food item knocking a buck off admission (up to a $5 discount); all proceeds go to the Hosea House. Local rock bands include Ashborne (lead vocalist Jason Davis sounds like a neo-Vedder), My Weapon of Choice and Discount Firearm.
