Music news you can use

Funkadelic: Ol' Uncle Marty used to say that there are two kinds of funk: music and the smell of napalm in the morning. So when Make It Funky! director Michael Murphy commands us to, uh, "Make it funky!" we can only assume that he's referring to the former. And with a celebration like this, we're happy to oblige. BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups (700 South Broadway; 314-436-5222) screens Murphy's Funky — a fortuitously timed documentary focusing on New Orleans' musical heritage — at 8 p.m. Saturday, December 10, with in-concert guests Jumpin' Johnny Sansone and Scott Miller. There's another screening at 8 p.m. Friday, December 16, at the Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard; 314-726-6161) featuring the Dogtown Allstars, Gumbohead — and Murphy himself. The admission/donation is $10 and benefits the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation.

Speak no evil:An instrumental band that can still rock a crowd? Who'd have Think Thank Thunk it? These local rockers need no lyrics; rather, their distinctive viola lends a voice so convincing, you'd think it was an emo kid's warble. Combating the use of three uppercase Ts is local band lowercase, who refuse to capitalize on anything but your energy with infectious emo-core licks. Catch our local pride and joys and have a drink drank drunk for $7 at Mississippi Nights (914 North First Street; 314-421-3853) at 7 p.m. Saturday, December 10, when they perform with Victory Records signees the Junior Varsity.

Glimmer, glimmer:Glow little synthband, rock out, rock out/Your new album is gonna come out, come out/May to the release party we wander/Where Brooke Edwards' sweet voice is singing yonder. Glow (the RFT's pick for Best Electronic Band of 2004) is a quiet synthpop set fronted by the flawlessly pitched Brooke Edwards (chosen by RFT readers as the Best Female Singer of 2003). They're releasing their second full-length, The Years, on Wednesday, December 14, at the Hi-Pointe (1001 McCausland Avenue; 314-781-4716). Catch the show and pick up the album.
