All This Useless Beauty

More About

Even inveterate nightcrawlers may be surprised by the city revealed in photographer Eric Post's book, Ghost Town: While Saint Louis Sleeps. Using wide-angle and macro lenses, Post shoots our hometown while she's dozing sweetly in the arms of Mother Night. His photos summon the hushed awe parents feel while gazing at their sleeping child, but his images also resonate with a sense of strange misgiving. These crepuscular landscapes are gorgeous but devoid of people. Where are we? Why isn't this city of the night bustling with happy wanderers, or desperate fun-seekers, or even a stray vampire? What good is all this beauty if there's no one to enjoy it? Ah, perhaps that's the reason for Post's book — to make you appreciate the beauty of St. Louis. Post signs copies of Ghost Townat 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is free.
