Donny and Marie's ears must be burning: The first line on Tea Leaf Green's latest album, Taught to Be Proud, declares, "Got a little bit of soul, got a little bit of rock & roll." Now, that's not to say that the San Francisco foursome eschews a little bit of country; in fact, the band is fomenting the latest roots-rock revolution. Between guitars, keyboards, harmonica and mandolin, TLG plays like a tethered jam band, one that enjoys improv without Phishing off the deep end. (Think Trey Anastasio fronting Creedence Clearwater Revival, or John Fogerty fronting Phish.) But no worries, as such a musical tug-of-war will satisfy the squad at either end, be they anything from a little bit country to a little bit rock & roll.
