Nice Pipes

Ach, we know the pain: You've been dragged to Riverdance too many times, and you refuse to have any more to do with the whole mess of Celtic-themed dance spectaculars. But wait, wait. This is The Pipes, Drums and Highland Dancers of the Black Watch and the Band of the Welsh Guards, and this is the older, much more martial brother of Riverdance.

For starters, the men of the Black Watch and the Welsh Guards are active-duty soldiers. Yes, manly indeed. And the Black Watch dancers perform the valorous Ghillie Callum(sword dance), which involves threading steps between the blades of live steel, and the Highland Fling, which is cardiovascular overload in kilts, as well as other traditional dances of the Scottish Highlands. These dances are about power tempered with grace and precision — but with a definite emphasis on power. The Welsh Guards, famous for performing the daily Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, provide the music, a selection of classics ("Men of Harlech," "Scotland the Brave") that tug at the heartstrings and stir the soul. This time, you'll be dragging her along to the performance. Dance St. Louis presents The Pipes, Drums and Highland Dancers of the Black Watch and the Band of the Welsh Guards at 8 p.m. at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; www.dancestlouis.org or 314-534-6622) tonight and again on Friday, February 10. Tickets are $30 to $63.
Thu., Feb. 9; Fri., Feb. 10
