Appleseed Cast started high above the thermosphere in Kansas, blithely toying with gravity, guitars and indie-rock normalcy. Albums such as Low Level Owl, Vol. 1 seemed ideally suited for an iPod on a red-eye flight: a little drowsy in mood and a bit disoriented in construction but ultimately panoramic in its seamless storytelling. Years later, with feet firmly planted on the sustain pedal, Appleseed Cast still have their atmospheric vibe — but now it's fully packed with a Jesus and Mary Chain punch. One could say they're now willing to poke their emo heads through the mesosphere and appeal to a whole new brand of kids that ain't in Kansas anymore.
