More About

Close your eyes. Conjure up an Elliott Smith song, preferably something from the XO era. Now imagine your Elliott Smith on 100 milligrams of Prozac... while he's on vacation...in Hawaii...sipping a daiquiri. Did you remember to replace his guitar with lap-steel? Excellent. You now have an accurate impression of the Elected's new album, Sun Sun Sun. Blake Sennett's gentle optimism rises to new heights on this sophomore effort, which has a twangy take on everything from doo-wop to Merseybeat. While the album isn't touted as conceptual, it boasts a seamless and natural arc from morning (the eye-rubbing, heart-lifting invitational "Would You Come with Me") to midday (the Gene Vincent-meets-Danny Zuko, jukebox-ready "Did Me Good") to evening (the last-dance-melancholy "Biggest Star"), until it closes with the quiet, ukulele-driven "At Home (Time Unknown)." With music as bright as its thrice-repeated title suggests, I daresay Sun could have cured even Elliott Smith's depression.
