Iguanas

Friday, March 3 at 9 p.m. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City)

When the Iguanas hit St. Louis this week, Mardi Gras will be long gone, the debauched spirit of excess replaced by solemnity and temperance. Not that it matters much to the New Orleans band, the rare act whose sound is a product of the Crescent City without being fenced in by NOLA's zydeco/second-line/ragtime caricatures. On the recent Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart, the five-piece mixes Latin rhythms, twangy strumming and bottom-heavy horns, all supporting Rod Hodges' rich, seductive baritone. Imagine mixing Mark Ribot's Cubano fixation with Morphine's barroom mash-notes, and you get a good idea what the Iguanas are after.
