Skeletons & the Girl-Faced Boys' Gitis the future of pop music; unfortunately, that future is years away. Nevertheless, this is genuine pop albeit pop suspended in a netherworld where Arthur Russell, the Associates, Philip Glass and Tonto's Expanding Head Band set the stylistic parameters. Led by honey-voiced Matt Mehlan (who recorded three solo albums solo before assembling a group for this one), Skeletons capture a new form of sonic beauty that is vaguely familiar, but mostly beguilingly bizarre. Still, once you acclimate yourself, their prog-gamelan-soul-funk and vocal acrobatics begin to make sense, like David Lynch's Mulholland Drive after a third viewing.
