Sausage Envy

The best of the wurst

Hermann's sausage is the envy of the state. This Saturday and Sunday (March 25 and 26), the self-proclaimed "Sausage Capital of Missouri" welcomes one and all to the 27th annual Wurstfest. The excitement centers around the Stone Hill Winery Pavilion (1110 Stone Hill Highway, Hermann) and the Hermannhof Winery Festhalle (330 East First Street, Hermann), where $5 paid at either location opens up a world of wurst to be sampled and purchased. Bratwurst, leberwurst and even the unassuming summer sausages will all be on-site, in all of their glory.

But the wurst doesn't stop there. Attendees are invited to experience the ever-popular Brat Knot-Tying Contest (Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Festhalle), the gut-busting Whole-Hog Sausage Breakfast (Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Hermann Fire House #2), the old-school Rhineland Wurstjaeger dancers (their first performance is at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Stone Hill) and wine-tasting opportunities at seven wineries. Additional highlights of the sausage fest include a statewide sausage-making contest (someone from Hermann has to be the odds-on favorite) and Sunday's Wiener Dog Derby, held at Hermann City Park at 1 p.m.
