Beat Happenings

Music news you can use

Go with the flow: Seems like you can't open a paper these days without reading about some guy named Terrence earning accolades for "flow." First, Mr. Howard earned an Oscar nod for Hustle & Flow — and now Mr. Terence Blanchard (that's one "r") has gained two Grammy nominations for the jazz album Flow. The latter and his sextet are hustlin' to the Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Boulevard, 314-533-9900 or www.sheldonconcerthall.org) at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, with jazz/hip-hop combo the Robert Glasper Trio opening. Tickets are $45 for orchestra, or $40 for the balcony.

Start spreadin' the news: The traditional tenth-anniversary gift is aluminum, so in celebration of Jazz at the Bistro's decade of music, Beat Happenings hopes Steve Tyrell will commence his Sinatra session with "Tippy Tippy Tin." The 2006 Jazz at the Bistro Gala Fundraiser and tenth-anniversary celebration swings into action Saturday, April 8, at the Renaissance Grand Hotel (800 Washington Avenue). All proceeds benefit Jazz at the Bistro's educational programs. (In a perfect world, Tyrell would also play "You Will Be My Music" in honor of this education fundraiser.) For tickets (starting at $50), e-mail leila@jatb.org or download the Gala Benefit form from www.jatb.org/benefit.asp.

More About

And it all comes down to you: Stevie Nicks, an advocate of Gypsy awareness, once sang, "Well, lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice/Ah, and it lights up the night/And you see your gypsy." Now you can see your gypsies as well at the St. Louis Gypsy (Roma) Music Festival on Sunday, April 9, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the World's Fair Pavilion in Forest Park. This Gypsy Awareness Program (of sorts) celebrates the Roma culture through song and dance. Tickets (available through www.metrotix.com) are $10; free for twelve and under.
