The Mr. Night Credo is a nebulous body of ideas and beliefs: tough to pin down, often contradictory and redolent of a contrariness that seemingly exists solely for the sake of argument. It is not a philosophy for the hidebound. But on the subject of underwear, the credo is quite clear: Never touch the stuff unless it's unusual. Sure, anyone can buy a pair of tighty-whities and feel confident. But the man who can invite ladyfriends over even when the basement is unfurnished or, better yet, when the basement is furnished in the style of Ottoman Baroque (i.e., gold damask and a whole lot of ostrich feathers) well, that man is King Confidence. It's true what C.S. Lewis said: Ladies love them some Turkish Delight.
Of course, when it comes to what the ladies wear in the "under-there" category, Mr. Night has no idea what to suggest. He's all talk and theory, after all. But the folks behind the local lingerie company Bling have some ideas about what looks good and what looks great. Girls Night Out Featuring Bling, the launch of the new designs in the Bling Couture line, takes place tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at TheTime (7298 Manchester Road, Maplewood; 314-644-2055 or www.thetimeishere.com). You can scope out the latest in sexiness, or even bring your own (new) lingerie in and have Bling creator/designer Kimberly Bolourtchi bling it up. And no, that doesn't mean she'll hot-glue faux-platinum medallions to the bustal regions of your peignoir. Blinging involves the artistic application of Swarovski crystals to the daring areas of the garment, drawing the eye toward those regions (much as the plumage of birds attracts mates). Admission is free, and of course, if you see something you just can't live without, everything's for sale.
