David Is Goliath
David Sedaris is not promoting a book. He's also not selling handmade socks or directing a version of The Cherry Orchard with an all-kitten cast, for that matter — but it's the whole not-promoting-a-book thing that has us most charmed. While many authors only take to the road when they've got a spanking-new hardcover to push, Sedaris, it seems, tours the nation for the sheer pleasure of getting out and sharing his stories. So snap up your $37.50 ticket (at 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org/events), and settle into your seat at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard) by 8 p.m. This is the third time the wonderfully witty raconteur has visited St. Louis since the release of his collection Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and we're taking the return trips as a high compliment. Plus, Sedaris is sticking around after his reading to sign copies of any of his tomes (as long as they're purchased from Left Bank Books). And we have our fingers crossed that a new collection is in the offing, though the fabulous essays printed in the New Yorker over the past year (particularly "Suitable for Framing," a hilarious account of the Sedaris family's newfound obsession with art-collecting) have tided us over just fine.
