Kung Fu You

Many institutions around town try to help St. Louisans better understand the culture of the Chinese, so why should the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org) be any different? This establishment — which, of course, is better known for its affiliations with science (and with Cheech) — is offering a program beginning at 11 a.m. today at the CenterStage on the topic of Chinese culture. During the brief-but-thorough hour-long event, the St. Louis Modern Chinese School presents stuff like the somewhat-scary lion dance (that lion's big eyes and erratic movements can be kinda spooky), the intricate designs of Chinese fashions, the mysteries of the martial arts and more! You can even try on that leering lion costume! This fun is free, so go, listen and learn: The wrist drum — that tambourine-looking thing on a stick — is waiting.
