Not from Venus

They are Venus

In its eighth year of proving Freud wrong, women's visual-and-performing-arts celebration Venus Envy continues to snip at the patriarchal tip with a mostly female erection. From 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday (April 14 and 15), the St. Louis Centre (Seventh Street and Washington Avenue) is awash with estrogen as 50 female artists (such as Alicia LaChance, who provides the image nearby) and musicians (some of the latter sporting the Y chromosome, but don't hold it against them) castrate conventions of gender with their provocative art and performances. The muliebria-empowered mayhem includes local-fashion-designer shows, Spa Envy sessions and food artistry courtesy of Wild Oats Market. The acrobatic pole dancers of Gravity Plays Favorites remove the "peep show" element from burlesque performance art, and the Dragon Flies continue the sensual, pro-woman artistry with their feminist, self-exploratory tribal dancing. And each night's grand climax is a wheeling performance by St. Louis' own Arch City Roller Derby team. For a full schedule of events, visit www.venusenvy.org or call 314-865-0181. Gain admission with a suggested donation of $5 to $10. Now bow before them, eunuch!
Fri., April 14; Sat., April 15
