Once upon a time, travelers in Arabia's deserts could only dream of stumbling across a respite from the blowing sand, the stench of camel, the heat. We don't have deserts in St. Louis, but we do have west county (hey!), and anyone who has ever been stuck in traffic on I-270 knows the allure of that corporate-park and theme-restaurant oasis, Westport Plaza (I-270 & Page Avenue, Maryland Heights). Never seen it yourself? Head out there from 5 to 8 p.m. for the first of this year's Parties at the Plaza. Sample local restaurants' offerings, and enjoy live music from popular cover band Hollywood 5 (pictured). You also can — and we're going to let the event's Web site speak for itself here — "[d]rink frosty products from sleek new aluminum bottles or partake of the new colorful drinks that will tickle your fruity side." You can't put a price on that, so admission is free. Contact the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce (314-576-6603 or www.mhcc.com) for more information.
