Music news you can use

Lady sings the blues: Billie Holiday was known as much for her troubled marriages and drug addiction as she was for her timeless blues music. So it seems appropriate that the 21st annual Women and Blues Concert is a fundraiser for Redevelopment Opportunities for Women (ROW), a nonprofit that helps abused and impoverished women become self-sufficient. On Saturday, April 22, the Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard; 314-726-6161) features E.C. Scott and Joanna Connor at 8 p.m. Tickets are $41 in advance, $50 day of show or $300 for a four-person reserved table.

Spotlight compatible: My light blew out the other day. When I went to replace the bulb, I discovered it wasn't a normal 60-watt, but a mysterious Ryne Watts! Further investigation revealed that a Ryne Watts is folksy, earnest and very bright (halogen- and LED-capable). I guess my light went out because it had other places to be, like the Ryne Watts CD-release show at 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at the Clubhouse (next to 714 Kellykris Court, St. Charles) with the Aquatic Record, Matt Dill and the Floating City's Gareth Schumacher. $2.

Choosy moms choose jazz: There is a new school of so-called "chunky" jazz, rife with protein blasts and crunchy funk. But as any first-grader could tell you, "smooth" jazz is where it's at: spreadable, silky and classic. Smooth jazz vet Chad Evans' CD-release party is Saturday, April 22, at the Missouri Historical Society (5700 Lindell Boulevard; 314-458-3547). Hosted by Kid Williams of Night Flight, the concert also features poetry from Fo Feet and the talented vocalist Andrea accompanying Evans. Sate your sweet tooth for $15. Kristyn Pomranz
