Keep the Spice Girls and their cheekily choreographed girl power firmly lodged in the 1990s. Real girl power exists today in the guises of the Sounds and Morningwood. The former's vocalist, Maja Ivarsson as blond as Debbie Harry in her disco heyday but a spitfire Joan Jett in demeanor commands the crowd's attention with her drum-kit-climbing and powerful pipes, antics that drive (and complement) the Swedes' punky keyboard-rock. The quintet's new album, Dying to Say This to You, isn't as new-wave influenced but still features hooks and attitude galore. Fronted by Chantal Claret, NYC fun-popsters Morningwood rock like the party band at a teen-movie's prom and, as their name implies, they keep the sexual revolution at the forefront.
