The Matches

Saturday, April 29, at 6 p.m. Creepy Crawl (412 North Tucker Boulevard)

Oakland pop-punkers the Matches are down with DIY. Shortly after forming in 1997, they commandeered a warehouse space primarily used to produce Web casts and turned it into an all-ages venue that birthed a show called L3: Live, Loud and Local. When major labels came a-calling, the quartet instead aligned itself with fellow staunch independent/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz (and his label, Epitaph Records) for 2004's E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals. Recorded in various band members' basements and living rooms, Locals features twelve manic, hook-happy tracks decrying apathy and cynicism. Though the Matches' current national jaunt with MC Lars and Whole Wheat Bread may be called "This Tour Is Not Punk Rock," in terms of determination, originality and hard work, the Matches defy their tour's claim.
