Let's Watch 'Em Play Two

Sadly, the Cardinals are in Kansas City this weekend, thereby depriving the bleacher creatures of any real enjoyment. You know, because there're no home games, and because the Royals fans suck as hard as the team does. Where's the spite and the loathing, like the Cubs fans give us (and get back in return)? Why, it's on the stage of the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City) in the Hydeware Theatre Company's production of Bleacher Bums. This Joe Mantegna-conceived play takes you deep into the cheap seats of Wrigley Field, as a disparate group of Cubby fans (long-suffering, no doubt) watch the Small Bears play the St. Louis Cardinals on a swell summer day. Hydeware takes you into the action as even HDTV can't, as actors portraying vendors work the aisles of the theater with peanuts and Cracker Jacks while the cast endures a full nine innings, including the requisite seventh-inning stretch. Will the verisimilitude of the production include a Cubs implosion? Probably not, as Mantegna is a Cubs fan. Bleacher Bums plays at 8 p.m. this evening and continues Thursday through Saturday weekly (May 19 through June 3). Tickets are $10 to $15 (hey! Just like the old bleachers!); call 314-368-7306 or visit www.hydewaretheatre.org for more information.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: May 19. Continues through June 3
