The Meat Purveyors seem to fancy themselves the ABBA of the insurgent country circuit. As if the two guys/two gals lineup wasn't enough, the band covered Björn and Benny's "S.O.S" on 2002's All Relationships are Doomed to Fail. But the comparison only goes so far; Jo Walston can't really sing like a Swede, and her bass-thumping, mandolin-picking bandmates always favor grit over gloss. What else would you expect from these hard-drinking Texans — cascading pianos and disco strings? The band is set to follow up 2004's Pain by Numbers with another cheery title, Someday Soon Things Will Be Much Worse! Don't let the emo-esque titles confuse you — The Meat Purveyors self-medicate with strong whisky and strong tunes. You may want to do the same.
